Dan married Jenny in 1957, and they had 4 children, Danny (1961), Caroline (1962), Kathy (1963) and Paul (1964). Danny had a mental illness and never performed in the band.
When his business with the antique shop became so successful that be became very busy and had to do alot of travelling, Dan quit the and tried to make a new living breeding pigs, though it didn't work out oo well.
Because he didn't know very much about the buisness, he had to depend on those who worked for him. But they used his inexperiance to tricked him, and by two years her had lost nearly all the money he had earned in the nine years before through the antique buisness. The family didn't have any thing left and there was no one who would loan them money, because they were "outsiders" from America. (read more about this in the Kelly family history section)
In 1990 Papa Kelly suffered a stroke. His right side was paralysed, and he was forced to stay in bed. Due to his strength od character, Dan Kelly recovered from his stroke (and after his recovery, he appeared on stage together with his children for the first time, in 1994, which you can watch below, during the song 'Take my hand').
On August 5th 2002, the family were forced to cope with yet another loss, the death of their father, Daniel Jerome, aged 71. He was buried in Darrara, County Cork in Ireland on the 9th of August.
